Roosevelt Island Day:  Free Herb Seed Planting

6/11/2016

Picture
At the Farmer's Market today Roosevelt Island residents planted organic basil and chive seeds for indoor herb gardens and summer enjoyment.

In every pot we added some beautiful compost from our partners at NYC Compost hosted by Big Reuse and we looked over at the food scrap drop off site where more apple cores and banana peels were being left for future compost.

For over a year, Janet and Julia and other gardeners on the outreach committee have been trying to find a way to give back some planting and gardening fun to the community. We finally got to begin today.  A.J. was our first visitor for a pot, some drainage materials, some soil, some basil and/or chive seeds, a sprinkle of compost, and a planting guide.

Eighty to a hundred residents enjoyed this offer today. We had as many adults as children and we look forward to more outreach, more planting, and more gardening connections to come.
