![]() RIGC Compost Committee is teaming up this year with the Boy Scouts to offer a place for recycling, reusing, and eventually composting the branches and needles from the Island tree sales. The longest night of the year and winter solstice have now passed and the feasting can continue as we await a green New Year 2015! ![]() This summer I was able to fulfill part of my high school's community service requirement working in the garden. I learned how to do many things; plant, compost, prune, rake, and weed. I also did story telling. The kids were so cute and I had a lot of fun. Not only did I read stories with them I also got a chance to chat with them. I worked two hours every week and was really surprised at how much could be accomplished in such a short amount of time. What did I like best? At first I thought pruning and composting, but now that I think back I can't decide. It was exciting to see the seeds I planted flower into zinnias. I was given a small bouquet to take home and admired them for a whole week. Helping a garden member prune a rose, chopping up branches for the compost, learning what's a weed, sitting in a cozy area reading and talking to the kids: all of it was great thanks to Julia and Marjorie. Having them for company while working was the best of all. I told my guidance counselor about it on the first day of school and he agreed that I had a wonderful experience. Holly's mom has been a gardener with our club for many years. In June, the current RIGC Board approved this community service project for her high school, the NYC Lab School, and Holly worked with an adult garden Board Member present on supervised tasks for a total of 20 hours across two summer months. ![]() Join us for this fun event next Saturday! Daffodils! RIGC is out and about helping other Island organizations with the Daffodil Project. In September, we helped to prepare the space in front of Gristedes. Sande and Mitch Ellison, Neal Weissman, Julia Ferguson, Curtis,(one of our associates) plus Paula and her children, all spent a morning digging and prepping with iDig2Learn. Last weekend it was time to go down to pick up the bulbs. RIGC members, Ron and Jennifer Schuppert gaveThe Daffodil Project a lift. Literally, donating their time, car and muscle to pick up hundreds of bulbs from Emily Walker of New Yorkers For Parks. The Daffodil service activity will be Saturday, October 11th from 11AM until Noon with a massive bulb planting at the Motorgate Bus Turnaround. RIGC is partnering with the iDig2Learn hosted Daffodil Project to kick off RIOC's Fall For Arts Festival. Volunteer opportunity at 10:15 AM that morning, contact Christina Delfico atiDig2Learn@gmail.com if interested. Join us for this fun event next Saturday morning! http://www.rigarden.org/bulletin-board.html |
