Cooper's Hawk Sighting: New Year's Day 2015

Two RIGC gardeners enjoyed this amazing bird sighting on January 1st as they walked out to the gardens on the bright clear day.  Careful study of the film and images that the gardener's took shows it to be a Cooper's Hawk. According to Cornell Lab,  these hawks are among the bird world’s most skillful fliers and may often tear through cluttered tree canopies in high speed pursuit of other birds.  This one was chasing a crow.  We have many bird sightings in the garden and on Roosevelt Island: from Night Herons to American Woodcocks. Enjoy a walk to the gardens and around Roosevelt Island on a clear day and keep your eyes open for these beautiful neighbors.
