RIGC Standards:  Top Garden Awards 2016

12/4/2016

The RIGC 2016 Standards Committee was composed of 11 members and aimed at encouraging as much gardening as possible to keep our gardens more beautiful than ever.
2016 Standards announced its first inspection in April and ended with another announced and final year-end inspection in November. They also made three unannounced inspections and followed up with some quick checks. At each inspection, gardens were scored based on their adherence to the published guidelines.  Each score was determined by utilizing paper ballots, to ensure that each vote held equal weight and was private.
In addition, the 2016 Board and Committee worked with people who requested help.

At each inspection, any garden that met club guidelines was also eligible to be nominated for a "Best Garden Award", and those nominations were also made via paper ballot.  A wide variety of gardens received nominations, and each, in some way, moved or impressed the voters.  At our October General meeting, the winners of the best garden awards were announced.  There were 10 best gardens, with one earning the title of "Garden of the Year".
And the winners were....

At the last Board Meeting for the 2016 year in late November, we were able to honor Dr. Ali Schwayri with a special paper weight for his many years of service and donation to the club.  One of the founding members of our group, Ali served as president from 1988-1989, 2000-2003, and 2014-2016 for 9-10 years.  Ali looks forward to keeping his garden and being present in the club. He still runs the Roosevelt Island Tree Board as well and is active with saving and advising RIOC for our many Island trees.

CCNY Grant  - Accessible Pathways 2016

12/2/2016

Another amazing work day with high school students at the Roosevelt Island Garden Club on Saturday, November 5, 2016.  9th and 10th grade students as well as one college age neighbor joined current garden members to finish off our Accessible Pathways Project for this 2016 season. Three of our newest volunteers are Roosevelt Island residents.

This year we received a grant from CCNYC and are continuing to re-work all pathways in the garden in order to try to make the space completely accessible for manual wheelchairs and all others who benefit from walking support.

This is 3-4 year project involves hard work of removing old gravel, laying landscape cloth, and transporting and laying in new trail mix gravel. UNIS students who have now graduated were instrumental in helping with the very beginning year of this project and we are so happy to see new interest with a new group.

We have now renovated over 500 feet of pathways of about 4 feet in width equaling more than 2000 square feet. We have finished approximately two thirds of the total garden path area.
