2018 is off to a great start in the cold March air of the Roosevelt Island Garden Club. Upgrading work has begun to repair rose garden borders and prepare for spring planting.
2017 was a hard year for our Rose Garden as Marjorie Marcallino, Michael Biagenak, the Rose Garden Committee and others had to battle rose rosette disease. This mite is contagious and the only way to fight it is to remove infected bushes, which RIGC had to do in large numbers. In total, about 15 beautiful, mature rose bushes were removed.
After this winter season and with constant checking to avoid re-infection of this mite, the roses will be replaced this spring. At the January Board meeting, a priority was set to upgrade any aging wood borders in the rose garden. This effort began in full this week. Anthony Longo is working with Marjorie Marcallino and Michael Biagenak alongside Neal Weissman, Johan Marfey, Kwasi Long, and Julia Ferguson. The goal is to complete this project by April and the planting season.
With grey skies and intermittent sunshine, the day was long and filled with good work. It was great to be back in the garden.
