RIGC hosts Leaf Printing for Fall for Arts Festival 2016

RIGC Outreach & Publicity was able to host four hours of leaf printing activity at the 2016 Fall for Arts festival!

After consulting with our resident artist/gardener,Peggy Roalf, printing became a more realistic plan. Then, thanks to amazing help from Girl Scout ambassadors, Alexandria Soto and Adelina Bracero as well as their troupe leader, Carmen Albino and also the son of one of our garden families, Andrew Bellewine, we gave back nature and art fun to our community on a very beautiful fall afternoon.

We had toddlers, grandparents, and all ages in between who stopped by to explore leaf shapes and bright paint colors and printing on paper.

May 7th, 2016 Saturday morning 10:00-11:00 a.m.

Our Roosevelt Island neighborhood school, P.S. / I.S. 217, won a competitive grant thanks to Ms. Ursula Fokine. The grant allowed children and their parents to enjoy weekend art classes at various local spots including the Noguchi museum, and Four Freedoms Park. Our own RI Community Garden was selected as a must-see part of the program, and iDig2Learn was happy to connect the school to RI Garden leadership to make it happen. On May 7th, Studio in a Schoolartists demonstrated watercolor techniques so that students could unleash their inner artist. Ms. Ursula Fokine, and RIGC leaders, Julia Ferguson and Anthony Longo, enjoyed watching budding young artists create art inspired from beauty of our gardens. Pictures say much more than words!

RIGC presents a Fall for Arts Mural: RI-Green Future

Local teen artist, Laura Dutilloy, has grown up on Roosevelt Island going to the gardens all her life and to the RIVAA gallery since she was in pre-school. She studies art in school,has done sets for school plays, and is an artist in many DIY ways for relaxation. When she looked over her mom's shoulder and saw a "Call for Community Artists" for the Fall for Arts festival on the RIGC email account, she exclaimed, " I would love to try that." The deadline was fast approaching and the theme announced was Roosevelt Island Past and Roosevelt Island Future. Laura presented a sketch connected to RIGC and "green" Island initiatives by the end of the day and was accepted for the festival and sponsored by RIGC.

During the painting day, some children came by and proposed bugs and worms. They drew a few ideas for her to include on the mural. Her family ended up helping her to finalize this first, largemural project on a beautiful fall day and are, of course, quite proud. Look closely to find monarchs and cormorants, compost and green roofs. Enjoy this whimsical view of Roosevelt Island as a green center for the city!

...And next year watch for the "Call for Community Artists." We will send it out quickly so that more RIGC members can get involved and sponsor more art for Roosevelt Island and continue to spread all our green ideas!

Catching the Light: Sun Print Workshop

Community is one of the very best parts of RIGC.

On Sunday, October 5th, our fall clean up service day,Peggy Roalf, member and compost committee teacher, brought us a wonderful workshop for all ages and all artistic levels.

Peggy, thank you so much for teaching us how to make cyanotypes! It was a really nice gift to us all.
