When you have a group of teens who have volunteered to get up at 10:00 a.m on a weekend morning, a little spring snow is a minor complication.
Many high schools now require community service as a graduation component. Some students at the UN International School have also started a "Volunteer Club." They provide service to places like Solar One for environmental goals and they love the idea that we are improving accessibility at RIGC. In addition, Patrick Alber of Cardinal Spellman High School, a RI son of two RIGC gardeners showed up with more energy than anyone.
The UNIS students were in awe of the low flying Canada geese, the open spaces and the air on Roosevelt Island. All the teens left saying things like," I can come back tomorrow if you want." and "Maybe we could apply to do gardening work as our sports activity."
Madeline Richards brought Croatian cookies that helped so much. Karen Lee and Michael Biagenek also braved the elements to help Beverly Shutes and Julia Ferguson get this project started. Click on our Bulletin Board page to discover how and when you can show up to help us with this multi-year plan.
